What is ReLEx SMILE
For more than 10 years, individualized Femto LASIK has been the scientifically accepted method for the correction of ametropia.
The ReLEx smile keyhole technology goes one step further: laser eye surgery has become even safe, gentle and fast. A 3D disk (lenticle) is prepared inside the cornea and removed through a tiny <4mm “keyhole” opening prepared by laser.
The volume and shape of the lenticula corresponds to the amount of tissue required to correct your vision disorder. Also the stability of the cornea is maintained and the production of the tear film is hardly disturbed. This makes ReLEx smile suitable for patients with dry eyes or contact lens intolerance. The icing on the cake: only 32 seconds per eye are required for the entire procedure.

Prerequisites before undergoing LASIK surgery
Who Qualifies to Undergo ReLEx SMILE EYE LASIK surgery?
You should consult a surgeon at an eye specialist centre for an indication. A few tests will be carried out, namely:
- The power of your glasses and degree of vision you possess will be checked.
- A three dimensional view of the surface of your eye ball will be taken, this is called a corneal topography. It will provide information on your corneal thickness, curvature, diameter and so on. It gives the parameter of your corneal structure.
- Your Pupil size
- Your Tear flow
- A full examination of your eyes (front and back), including the intra ocular pressure.
- You will be asked about any underlying medical history such as rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases, severe dry eyes or any other contraindications.
Once the above checks have been done, you will know if you are a suitable candidate for surgery.

Procedures
- In ReLEx SMILE, the Femtosecond laser is used to create a lenticule in the inner layers of the cornea.
- The Femtosecond laser is able to penetrate the surface of the cornea without any cutting involved or causing any damage to the surface layers.
- A small, micro incision (3-4mm) is created at the side of the cornea.
- The lenticule that was created earlier is gently removed through the small micro incision made.
- With the lenticule removed, the cornea shape is altered, which also changes the power of the eye.
